Sandbox MMO Worlds Adrift Is Drifting Away Due To Insufficient Commercial Viability

Worlds-Adrift-Shuts-Down-In-July-Due-To-Lack-Of-Commercial-Viability-As-Fans-Ask-For-Ability-To-Host-Game-In-Their-Own-Servers-Publicly-And-Privately

London-based indie game developer Bossa Studios has announced that the sandbox MMO Worlds Adrift will be closing down in July 2019. The game went into early access around a year ago and just never took off to fully launch. The MMO with a community-crafted world, open PvP, skyship combat and realistic physics apparently had “not captured the imagination of as many people as (the developers) needed to make it commercially viable“. Bossa cites that the ambitious nature of the project meant that “all of (their) work went into making the game work rather than making it the experience (they) wanted it to be“.

Worlds Adrift will not be sailing quietly into the night. We will host an End of the World event which will be live streamed on Twitch and will feature an AMA with the team. The exact date and details of this event will be announced here and on our other community channels (Twitter,Facebook, Steam Forum and Discord) soon.

Worlds Adrift will no longer be worked on, but players will be able to enjoy the game with style until the servers shut down in July. From now through the game’s closure, all of the cosmetic items in the in-game shop will be given out to every player. Additionally, Worlds Adrift Founder Captains will receive a free copy of I Am Bread and Surgeon Simulator, two Bossa Studios’ games on Steam. Those who purchased the game on or after April 29, 2019 are eligible for a refund on Steam.

Bossa Studios states that they will continue to be a developer and publisher of games. They have multiple other unannounced titles in development that they will be talking about in the near future. Overwhelmingly, the response from the Worlds Adrift community seems to be mostly negative with many blaming drastic decisions like the split between PvE and PvP servers for the lack of significant playerbase. Some have asked to let gamers host their own servers so that World Adrift’s spirit may live through the “true fans”.
