MapleStory 2 has drawn a lot of attention lately with the highly anticipated English version’s closed beta announced to arrive globally on May 9th. What you may not know is that MapleStory 2 already has two other existing and regularly updated versions; the Chinese version and the slightly older Korean version. Well, we all know where the money is in the gaming industry at the moment, so it’s not too surprising to hear that even the adorable Maple world is set have a battle royale PvP mode.

Nicknamed Mush King Championship, the survival PvP mode will allow up to 50 people to join a special arena where they will eliminate each other until only a single player remains. You can watch the Korean developer’s video below to see it in action (starting at 0:30 in the video).

“A battle royale game, also spelled battle royal, is a video game genre that blends the survival, exploration and scavenging elements of a survival game with last man standing gameplay.”

MapleStory 2 is not the first and surely will not be the last MMORPG to follow the battle royale trend. Eastern MMORPG developers seem to have caught on and invested in tapping into the fast-growing battle royale fan-base with games like Moonlight Blade and Revelation Online also already set to receive their own battle royale features. Check out Moonlight Blade’s battle royale here.

What are your thoughts on the battle royale genre’s recent influence on the development of MMORPGs? How long do we have until Western MMORPGs begin to implement similar features?
